Chapter Thirteen

BY the end of the their second leg, Brenna’s rear was screaming in pain. Her thighs were sore, her hands cramped, her back protesting the miles and miles of jarring terrain.

MacKinnon rode at the head of their procession, leading them along the river, over knolls and through valleys, and every once in a while, blessedly, through forest roads. Already she could feel where the sun had burned her on her cheeks and the top of her nose.

After spending so many years indoors, she was not quite used to the sun. She’d toiled in the gardens of the castle every once in awhile, but truth be told, she spent more of her time worrying over her children and their whereabouts than anything else. She’d personally overseen their studies, run the kitchen and kept as hidden away from her husband as she could. Especially lately, after the death of his father.

Though the old laird had not been able to come to her aid behind closed doors or if he was away, when he did take note of his son’s cruel behavior, he attempted to put a stop to it. With him being gone, there had been no barrier between Brenna and Ronald’s caustic temper.

She slowed her horse, thankful that the sun had started its descent and within an hour, earth would have a reprieve from its burning surface. For now, she was safe beneath a canopy of needles and leaves.

Their camp was not far from the river, in similar terrain to where they’d taken their noontime break. Firs and oaks reached high, letting the sun’s light in, but its heated rays no longer blistered her skin.

She glanced to her children, who also had pink noses, but they didn’t look as bad off as she felt.

“My lady,” Gabriel approached her.

No doubt, he’d want to help her down. He’d tried to help her mount after the nooning, but mounting wasn’t the issue she had. It was how far down the ground looked from atop her perch, and her fear that the horse would shift at just the right moment, causing her to fall. And with the fall, she’d scare the animal into trampling her and crushing her for good this time.

“MacKinnon,” she drawled.

“May I assist ye?”

She pursed her lips and narrowed her eyes. Well, she didn’t want him to know that she feared getting down. She at least had to make a pretense of not wanting his assistance. And it had nothing to do with the fact that she wanted him to touch her again. Nothing at all to do with the hardness of his body or the tingles that caressed her body when he touched her. “I’m perfectly capable of getting off this horse myself.”

“Aye, most likely, but all the same, I’d not be a gentleman if I dinna offer.”

“There’s no need to pretend. We both know ye’re not a gentleman,” she retorted.

That only made him grin. “But I like to pretend.” Without another word he reached for her and wrapped his strong, sturdy hands around her waist.
